Woke up at 5:45 am. Already dressed to run since obviously the way to avoid sleeping in is to sleep in uncomfortable clothes (including sports bra). Got my socks on, laced my shoes up, got Zoe and headed out. It was awesome to be back by 6:30 after 5K. It was damp and drizzly but it was a good run. I was mighty sore from yesterday’s workouts and gardening though. The only hitch to running so early is the drivers who are essentially still asleep. I seriously saw 3 drivers go right through stop signs. And not rolling stops but zooming right past. I saw another driver in the wrong lane on a residential street.
Ugh.
Anyhow, I stayed up later than I should have last night planning my garden. I’m going to try square foot gardening this year. I did row planting last year but I like the idea of neat and tidy boxes. Rows were tidy also but I like experimenting in the garden! I don’t mind if I fail, as long as at least one thing grows!!
Need a few more herb seeds to make sure I have enough for cooking and have to get some tomato plants as well. I also need to square off the garden somehow. I was going to use rope or maybe wire, something that might be lying around the garage.
Amazing new raised garden bed is set up and ready! Thanks mike ! <3 #runblr #fitblr #garden #gardening
Decided to do some intervals on the treadmill. 1 min on, 1:30 jog recovery. Alternating between hills at max incline and sprints. Fun stuff.
Then P90X biceps and back.
I was pouring sweat. It was nice since I was stuck dealing with a migraine attack all weekend and my medication didn’t seem to last the whole time.
Anyhow, good workout!
In other news, I’m now hooked on Sherlock thanks to my cousin. And he failed to mention each season is only 3 episodes. WTF. I can’t handle that. NOT ENOUGH.
Okay time to eat lunch!
Body Glide Sucks - Use these products instead
I don’t quite understand why runners continue to use Body Glide.
It’s such an inferior product compared to other stuff available out there that’s marketed toward triathletes. Body Glide doesn’t last whatsoever and when I was a newbie and used to use it I found that I had to re-apply very often. Like… at least every 2 miles, if more.
Here are a few other options, because really Body Glide sucks. I work at a running shop and we only carry that product. I hate recommending it to people because I find it just doesn’t work.
Sport Shield - The best of the best. Comes in roll on or single use towelettes. This stuff must be engineered by the military. It’s fantastic. I never used to like wearing shorts until I found this product. I ran my first 50km in short with this stuff and didn’t need to re-apply. Gold.
Hoo Ha Ride Glide - Marketed toward triathletes, but what caught my eye was that it was made for women. I’m going to be trying it out soon.
Brave Solider Friction Zone - An anti chafing cream, it contains menthol just so your’e aware. Another one I want to try, again something I’ve only seen in triathlon gear stores.
The winner is still Sport Shield by 2 Toms. 2 Toms also makes an excellent blister shield product that works like a charm.
Next I’d love to do some research on sunscreen products for runners but frankly sunscreen is too expensive to just go out and buy willy nilly and I doubt companies are going to send me any randomly. But I have tried a few and eventually intend to compile a little review post.
Morning run & podcasts
Great 3 miles this morning with Zoe bear.
Ended the run with steep hill repeats. I remember doing the same hill repeats last year and being so winded I was gasping. Today they felt pretty effortless. Funny since I’ve only done a little bit of hill training lately.
A few interesting podcasts this week
Reversing the collapse of the honey bee industry - The most terrifying podcast that I listened to this week. Save the honey bees or else we all die. This is actually a topic I find fascinating. I love bees a whole lot, they’re probably the only insect I actually enjoy watching in the garden and the only one that can approach me without me screaming.
Raising Cubby: A Father and Son Story - the two have Aspergers. Interesting podcast. I felt myself really identifying with the father who was being interviewed. Although I don’t think I have the condition so I guess I’m just socially inept.
Neo-Nazism in Germany & the Beate Zschaepe Trial - Not my favorite podcast this week. I thought it could have been a little more detailed and in depth. It seemed like a superficial look at a very intricate case. Nonetheless it was interesting.
and voila! There’s some interesting stuff for you guys to listen to on the run or while doing other stuff.
Run or Die
Kilian Jornet is a world champion ultra-runner.
Pre-ordered this baby.
Because I have a huge crush on Kilian
and also he has mad skillz.
wake up at 6am for a run:
LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL AND I FEEL DEVINE
wake up at 6am for work:
FUCK THE SUN FOR BEING SO BRIGHT I HATE LIFE.
Yes I find mushrooms fascinating. Great run this morning, nice and sunny with a cool breeze. #fitblr #runblr #run #mushrooms
P90X workout tonight was tough. I was exhausted and my body was having none of it. Glad I did it though.
Maybe it’s my imagination (probably) but my ass looks fabulous lately. Maybe this strength stuff is working after all. Or maybe it’s the lighting in here.
